As we gear up for another long weekend in Malaysia for the Chinese New Year, most Klang Valley folks will be heading out of town. But if you’re spending your break in the city, here’s a list of gigs and live music events you can check out this week.

Tuesday (17th Feb)

Merdekarya Live in February | Free Entry
Merdekarya continues their programming this week with their regular open mic night, featuring aspiring musician duo, Suzie & Harris. Expect a night of covers with pockets of originals here and there, but nothing beats the cheap drinks to prep your liver up for the long weekend.

No Black Tie presents Zalila Lee & Friends | RM30 | 9:30PM
Although stationed at the hustling and bustling clubbing lanes of Changkat Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur, No Black Tie is undoubtly Malaysia’s premiere jazz club with a long portfolio of live performances by some of the best international and local jazz musicians around. That being said, the venue has often supported other forms of music – from the now defunct Unclogged series that featured underground music in the mid 2000s, to hip-hop and R&B shows. A mainstay in the singer-songwriter circuit in KL, Zalila Lee will be heading the stage this 17th February alongside Melina Willam (of rock act, Tempered Mental), and composer / drummer, Adriane Palikat.

Kakiseni’s Buskstop Season 2 | Free | 12pm – 6pm
Berjaya Times Square, Pavillion KL, and Quill City Mall
Kakiseni recently launched their second season of BuskStop, an initiative to promote busking culture in Malaysia. Hosted at several popular malls in the golden triangle of Kuala Lumpur, the series will feature various musicians, from original singer songwriters to veteran buskers. Drop a couple of ringgits if you’re around that area.

Secret Show: Man Under Zero Effort, Orang | Free Entry | 4pm
One of Kuala Lumpur’s more exciting bands to watch live, Man Under Zero Effort will be hosting a secret show (well, not so secret now) alongside experimental / psychedelic hinted pop artist (ref: Animal Collective, Deerhunter etc), Orang, who rarely performs his songs live. It would be a good opportunity to catch both exciting acts on a Saturday afternoon, for free. The venue is yet to be announced, but keep an eye on the official FB events page for updates (our bets are on TTDI).

Sunday (22nd Feb)

Named after a ‘sickening’ Lithuanian beer, OPTIMALINIJA Fest first took place in Moscow in 2011. Fast track to 2015, OPTIMALINIJA Fest III is a touring festival happening back to back in Malang, Indonesia, and here in KL. Come Sunday, Rumah Api will be housing the noisecore / noisegrind festival, featuring artists from around the globe. For the untrained ears, here’s a sample of some of the artists on the roster.

BRNWRCK Showcase : Final Goodbye | RM40.00 (Presale) / RM 65.00 (At the door)
Prominent US hardcore punk band, Bane, will be playing live in Kuala Lumpur alongside Fingerprint (ID), Memorial, Triangle, RECREATE, and many more. The show kicks off at 3pm at Blackbox in Publika, KL. Work hard, mosh hard.
