#27 Pusher

“WAKE UP ARTIFICIALISED BLIND NATION!”

How’s that for a statement? Kuala Pilah born Pusher has chanted such slogans for over a decade now – in form of ear-crunching, nail-biting, straight-from-the-alley reggae infused street punk. And they’re zombie-serious! So what we have here is a ‘kuih lapis’ of the many waves of Punk Rock: from the 77’s, a wee bit of 80’s and 90’s era, with generous hints of unadulterated blues and reggae. All compressed into the culmination of Pusher. With the absence of the Mohawks, that is.

In other words, Pusher would be a crossover of Tim Armstrong’s attitude, Mick Jones’ chunky riffage and Tom Gabel’s social-awareness – without over-doing it. They are indeed seasoned craftsmen: the quartet are also members of Malaysian punk pioneers, ‘Carburetor Dung’ (a.k.a. DUNG), ‘Freygyle’ and female-fronted ‘The Pips’. Very punk rock.

Radio On Fire

Interview

It’s safe to say that in their latest release “Our Beloved City of The Dead”, Pusher has borrowed the elements of Operation Ivy, Rancid, Against Me! and The Clash.

What more could we expect from the final bastion of grassroots socially-aware DIY, and yes folks, it is well adorned! You may get a copy of their latest release…

Jimmy Iris

@Orion / @El Pheng – thanks for your comment / suggestion. We’ll look into how we can improve on both audio recording and interviews

@dain said – text for the episodes were written by our guest writer, Jimmy Iris

  • Orion says:

you guys (wknd sessions) should really improve on the interviewing part. Your interviewer needs to act less of a ditz and more of a credible interviewer. more room for improvement on that on. ditto on the sound transfer.

  • El Pheng says:

IT’s a good video but you people had reduced Pusher’s punkrockness. And i’d prefer the interview to be a bit more brain-challenging. But i don’t xpect anything anyway.. All n all Pusher had always been different..

  • dain said says:

‘…Tom Gabel’s awareness without overdoing it…’ what does that mean, you either have social awareness or you don’t! or is it a case of having social awareness but only a little bit? or is it having social awareness but don’t want to scare people away, so that’s a kinda polite social awareness then? or is it social awareness but sikit aje? or is it social awareness but you have to be a bit sociable? ke, social awareness that’s not awareness at all, just a bit of marketing pr, or is it social awareness…i mean tell it to Mick or perhaps Strummer, and watch him roll in his grave, I mean I like Pusher’s sound but who’s writing this?

i tried this at my office, somehow the audio sounds better on a Mac! hmm maybe u guys (the wknd) can look into that.

  • samb 89 says:

    nice n good music!

sound is ok for me n i like my radio to burn!\m/

  • Rupert says:

I don’t know much about sound setting but, I am guessing that Wknd people are used to record acoustic singer-songwriter sets, those that has minimal noise and very much clarity. The recording is too ‘clean’, vocal is too prominent and the bass couldn’t be heard. Somehow the ‘raw-ness’ of the band is loss in the process.

Kudos on the effort to include non-mainstream friendly bands. Hope to see you guys at gigs. Watch Pusher live, that will do them more justice that this video! Cheers!
